Kelshi to Ladghar Beach Trek

4.5 (63 reviews)

Overview

The Konkan coast hides some of the best walking in Maharashtra away from the well-known beach towns, and the stretch from Kelshi to Ladghar is a genuine quiet gem. It begins at Kelshi, a calm temple village, and follows cliff edges and open sand south toward Ladghar — a beach famous for sunsets so vivid they turn the wet sand a deep orange-red, earning it a local nickname as the 'red' or 'blue' beach depending on exactly how the light catches it that evening.

This is a walk, not a climb: the sea sits on one side the entire way, laterite cliffs rise on the other, and the terrain never asks for more than steady, comfortable walking. The full route covers about 6 to 8 km spread across the day, mixing hard-packed sand with a handful of rocky headlands to skirt around, and building in plenty of natural stopping points for coconut water and photos rather than rushing between two fixed ends.

Wild Rangers runs it as an overnight with a beachside campsite near Ladghar, which turns what could be a single long day into something more atmospheric — the sunset itself, the sound of waves through the night, and an early-morning beach walk the next day before heading back. October through March is the ideal window, when the Konkan stays dry and cool; the peak monsoon brings humidity and storms that make the whole coast considerably less pleasant to walk.

At roughly 230 km from Mumbai and 200 km from Pune, the two-day batch includes transport, camping, meals, a guide and the full coastal walk, and pairs naturally with a stop in Dapoli or Anjarle if you want to extend the Konkan theme further. This is about as gentle an introduction to trekking as Wild Rangers offers — no fitness barrier, no technical sections, just sand, salt air and one of the more photogenic sunsets on the whole coastline.

Kelshi itself is worth lingering in briefly before setting off — its temple and quiet lanes give the walk a proper starting point beyond just a car park, and the pace across both days stays deliberately unhurried rather than treating the village as merely a departure point.

Low tide widens the walkable sand considerably along several stretches, so the exact route and pace shift slightly from batch to batch depending on the day's tide table.

Local fishing boats are still a common sight along the route, and the villages themselves stay largely untouched by tourism, which is a big part of what keeps this stretch of coast feeling genuinely undiscovered.

Based in Konkan, this easy 2-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
