Aadrai Jungle Trek

4.7 (10 reviews)

Overview

Aadrai is what the Malshej Ghat monsoon looks like when it's at its most theatrical: a dense evergreen forest where every few steps cross a stream, every rock wall wears a coat of moss and fern, and the canopy closes over you so completely that midday feels like dusk. In peak rain the forest floor turns into what regulars call the 'green carpet' — a thick mat of fallen leaves underfoot — while multiple waterfalls cross the trail itself rather than sitting off to the side as a viewpoint. It's the most purely 'forest' of all the Malshej treks, and the one photographers ask for by name.

The walk starts at Dehene village and drops into the valley, crossing the Aadrai stream several times before climbing back out the far side — roughly two and a half to three hours of walking with local Dehene guides who know exactly which crossings need a hand and which ones you can splash through on your own. Expect silver-feathered bamboo groves, oversized jungle leaves, and the constant white noise of running water. Somewhere along the route is the 'shower walk' — a roadside fall you walk straight under — which has become a rite of passage on every batch that runs it.

This is easy-to-moderate by distance but genuinely demanding by conditions: wet rock, slick roots and stream crossings mean it isn't for children under ten or anyone unsteady on their feet, and Wild Rangers only runs a batch when the river level is actually safe to cross — heavy cloudburst days get postponed rather than pushed through. August and September are peak season for the full green-carpet effect underfoot, though July is already lush enough to be worth the trip.

Getting there is part of the experience: the drive from Mumbai runs via Kalyan and up the Malshej Ghat road, itself lined with roadside waterfalls in the rains, about four hours each way. Batches leave early, reach Dehene by mid-morning for breakfast and a briefing, spend the middle of the day in the forest, and head back out by mid-afternoon with an optional stop at a Malshej viewpoint for photos before the drive home. Pune trekkers join the same batch — the approach up the Malshej Ghat road works just as well from that side.

Transport, a local guide, breakfast and lunch are all included, so the only real preparation is footwear: grippy shoes that you don't mind getting soaked, since there's no staying dry on this one. If you've done the drier forts nearer the city and want to see what a Sahyadri rainforest actually looks like under full monsoon load, Aadrai is the one to book.

Based in Maharashtra, this easy 1-day trek is best attempted during July, August, September — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
