Rajgad to Torna Trek

Overview

The Rajgad to Torna trek is one of Maharashtra's most iconic two-fort expeditions - a continuous ridge walk through the Sahyadris connecting Rajgad, the formidable capital fort of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, with Torna (Prachandagad), his first captured fort. Over two days you traverse dense forest, grassy 'invader' hills and saddle ridges with sweeping views of the surrounding ranges, camping or staying near Rajgad on night one and descending from Torna on day two. It is a moderate trek, best from October to March, and a bucket-list route for Pune and Mumbai trekkers.

Based in Pune, Maharashtra, this moderate 2-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs

Where does the Rajgad to Torna trek start and end?

It starts at the Rajgad base (near Bhor/Gunjavane, ~80 km from Pune) and ends at the Torna (Velhe) base after the ridge traverse. The two forts are linked by a continuous Sahyadri ridge.

How difficult is the Rajgad to Torna trek?

Moderate. It is a 2-day ridge walk with steady climbs, forest sections and grassy 'invader' hills, plus an overnight camp. Reasonable fitness is needed; no technical climbing.

What is the best time for Rajgad to Torna?

October to March for clear ridge views and comfortable nights. The monsoon (June-September) is lush and green but slippery, with leeches on the grassland sections.

How do I reach the trek from Mumbai or Pune?

From Pune it is about 80 km to the Rajgad base; from Mumbai roughly 200 km (4-5 hrs) via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Shared transport from the Pune meeting point is often available.

Why are Rajgad and Torna famous?

Rajgad was the capital fort of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for over 25 years; Torna (Prachandagad) was his first fort capture in 1643 and the highest in the Pune district. The ridge linking them is a classic Sahyadri traverse.

How long is the Rajgad to Torna trek?

Two days / one night - day 1 climbs Rajgad and starts the ridge traverse to camp, day 2 finishes the walk to Torna and descends (~10-12 km of ridge overall).
