Korigad Fort Trek

Overview

Korigad is the gentle giant among the Lonavala forts. Where its neighbours favour exposed pinnacles and vertical scrambles, Korigad offers something calmer and, for many trekkers, more satisfying to actually explore: a near-intact circular rampart wall you can walk all the way around, old cannons still aimed out over the ghats exactly where they were left, and a wide, flat plateau inside the walls that invites wandering rather than a quick photo and departure.

The trail up starts from Peth Shahpur village near Lonavala and winds through forest to the fort gate in roughly 45 minutes to an hour — about 2 to 3 km of genuinely easy walking with only a mild incline throughout. There's no exposure anywhere on the route, which makes this one of the most reliably family-friendly forts in the entire region, whether that family includes young children, older relatives, or simply trekkers who'd rather spend their energy exploring the top than fighting for the climb.

Once inside the walls, the plateau opens up into a genuine meadow ringed by the rampart, with room to picnic, wander among the old water cisterns and small temples, and take in views down to Pawna Lake at leisure rather than on a schedule. Monsoon paints the whole plateau green and washes the old cannons clean; winter trades that lushness for crisp, clear views across to the lake and surrounding ghats.

At about 100 km from Mumbai and 70 km from Pune via Lonavala, Wild Rangers runs Korigad as an easy one day batch with transport, a guide and generous time built in at the top rather than a rushed round trip. It pairs naturally with a lakeside camp at Pawna or the neighbouring Lohagad and Visapur forts if the group wants to turn the day into a fuller fort-hopping weekend. For a low-effort morning that still delivers a genuinely pretty, historically interesting Sahyadri fort, Korigad is one of the easiest yes decisions on the whole calendar.

The rampart's near-complete state is unusual for a fort this accessible — most Sahyadri forts have lost far more of their outer walls to time, which is part of what makes walking the full circuit at Korigad feel genuinely different from a typical ruin visit elsewhere in the region.

The short climb also makes Korigad a popular choice for a half-day add-on before or after other Lonavala plans, rather than needing to be the whole day's activity on its own. Pair it with the Salher Salota Range Trek for a bigger Sahyadri forts circuit.

Based in Lonavala, this easy 1-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October, November, December, January, February — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
