Lohagad & Visapur Fort Trek from Mumbai

Overview

Lohagad and Visapur sit as sibling forts on opposite ends of the same Lonavala ridge, and together they form the easiest, prettiest fort day out anywhere near either Mumbai or Pune. Lohagad is the more famous of the two, largely thanks to its 'tail' — the vinchu kata gateway, a narrow spine of fort wall jutting dramatically out over the ghats, and one of the single most photographed spots anywhere in the Sahyadris. Visapur, sitting just across the saddle, plays a different role entirely: in the monsoon its cliffs turn into a genuine series of falling waterfalls that you climb directly alongside rather than merely view from a distance.

The walk begins at Malavli, conveniently right by the railway station, climbing first to Lohagad — about 1.5 km of easy, well-made steps to the plateau, with the tail gateway itself a short additional walk along the exposed ridge. From there it's a 2 to 3 km ridge walk across to Visapur (or a quick descent and re-climb, depending on the route taken that day), where the monsoon waterfall staircase becomes the clear highlight of the whole outing.

Combined, the full day covers an easy 6 to 8 km with no real exposure anywhere along the route, which keeps it comfortably suited to families and genuine first-time trekkers rather than requiring any prior fort-climbing experience. Winter brings the clearest views out over Pawna Lake and the nearby Bhaja caves; the monsoon trades that clarity for the waterfalls that make Visapur worth the visit in the first place — both seasons genuinely reward the trip differently.
