Kothaligad (Peth Fort) Trek from Mumbai
Overview
Kothaligad has a party trick most Sahyadri forts don't: a narrow, needle-shaped rock pinnacle with a spiral staircase carved straight through the stone, climbing to a small temple at the very top. Locally it's nicknamed the 'Tower of Peth' for exactly that feature, and it turns what could be an ordinary short fort walk into something genuinely memorable — a bit of playful scrambling through solid rock that first-timers and kids alike tend to remember long after the bigger, harder treks blur together.
The base village of Peth is a quiet, rural spot near Karjat, and the trail up is about 2 to 3 km with a mild incline through fields and forest — easy by any measure — passing a cave temple on the way to the fort's base. From there the character changes fast: a short, steep staircase cut into the rock of the pinnacle itself, a genuine bit of scrambling that's exciting without being technical, popping you out onto a small plateau with old cisterns, ruined structures and wide views across the Karjat valley toward the Matheran range.
It runs comfortably year-round: the monsoon turns the approach lush and green, while winter trades that for clear skies and cooler walking. Because it's a lighter, lesser-run fort compared to some of its more famous neighbours, it stays calm even on weekends — no queues at the pinnacle, no crowd noise on the plateau, just the fort and the view.
At around 100 km from Mumbai (and nearer still from Pune) via Karjat, Wild Rangers runs Kothaligad as an easy one day batch with transport, a guide and proper time built in at the pinnacle and the plateau — this isn't a trek to rush. It's one of the better choices for a first fort trek, a family outing, or simply a half-day escape that still delivers a genuine sense of adventure, and it pairs naturally with a riverside stop in Karjat on the way back if the group wants to stretch the day a little longer.
The pinnacle staircase looks more intimidating in photos than it feels underfoot — it's short, has natural hand- and foot-holds worn into the rock over generations, and a guide goes up with every small group, so even nervous first-timers usually find it more fun than frightening once they're actually on it. Bring comfortable shoes and enough water; there's little shade on the final approach to the fort base, so a cap matters more here than a raincoat outside the monsoon months.
Based in Karjat, this easy 1-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October, November, December, January, February — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
