Kashmir Great Lakes Trek from Mumbai

4.6 (44 reviews)

Overview

Some treks are beautiful; the Kashmir Great Lakes trek is beautiful in a way that genuinely surprises people who think they know what to expect from a Himalayan walk. Seven days, a chain of turquoise alpine lakes each sitting beneath its own snow peak, meadows so saturated green they look retouched — this is the Kashmir the headlines never show, silent and high and a long way from any road.

The route crosses three passes over the week, including the standout 4,200 metre Gadsar, moving from one lakeside camp to the next: Vishansar first, then Kishansar and Gadsar, on to the twin Satsar basin, and finally Gangbal beneath the slopes of Mount Harmukh before the descent out to Naranag. Each day's walk delivers a genuinely different landscape — this isn't a trek that repeats itself.

It's graded Difficult, and honestly: long walking days, real altitude, and those three passes mean this suits fit trekkers who already have some Himalayan mileage behind them rather than a first-timer looking for an easy introduction. Six to seven hours of walking a day at altitude is the baseline expectation, and the reward scales with the effort — this is widely considered one of the most scenic treks in the entire Indian Himalaya.

Wild Rangers runs it as a flight- or train-assisted batch from both Mumbai and Pune, handling the Srinagar connection and the drive to the Sonamarg base, with local transport, camps, meals, a mountain guide and full permit coverage included throughout — the trek runs through a regulated area, so the permit is built into the price rather than left for trekkers to sort out themselves.

The window is short and non-negotiable: July through September only, once the winter snow has cleared enough to open the passes and before the weather turns again. Outside that stretch the route simply isn't viable. Pack warm layers, grip shoes, a proper rain layer and a headlamp — conditions shift fast at this altitude even in peak summer. A stop in Srinagar or Gulmarg on either end rounds out the trip nicely. If a single Himalaya trek had to represent the whole range's best scenery, this would be the one most guides would point to.

Prior Himalaya experience isn't mandatory, but it genuinely helps — six to seven hours of daily walking at altitude for a full week is a real commitment, and trekkers who've done at least one moderate Himalayan trek beforehand tend to enjoy the passes more and struggle with them less. Wild Rangers issues a detailed kit list ahead of departure covering layering for both warm afternoons and genuinely cold nights at camp.

Based in Jammu & Kashmir, this difficult 7-day trek is best attempted during July, August, September — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
