Gorakhgad Trek

Overview

Gorakhgad is what you book when you want the drama of a pinnacle climb without the crowds that come with the famous ones. Tucked into the hills above Murbad in Thane district, it's known for two caves carved near its summit — once used by ascetics — and for a short, sharp scramble up a rock pinnacle at the very top that hands you a genuine 'summit' feeling in a fraction of the time and traffic of the better-known climbs nearby.

The approach from the Dehari/Pachapur base climbs through forest and open grass to the fort plateau, about 3 to 4 km with a steady gain and a rocky final stretch — a moderate trek by any measure. At the top, the two caves come first: one large enough to sit in comfortably, atmospheric and cool, holding water through the monsoon months. Then comes the highlight — a short but genuinely exposed climb up the pinnacle itself using a fixed rope, ending on a small flat summit with the entire Murbad valley spread out below. It's brief, but it's real height, which is exactly why Wild Rangers manages it in small groups with a guide handling the rope throughout.

October through February brings dry rock and the clearest views, making it the safer window for the pinnacle scramble; July through September turns the hillside green and fills the caves, but slicker rock means the roped sections get handled with extra care during those months. Either way, this isn't a first trek for someone nervous about height — it's better as a next step after you've done a few of the easier forts and want a bit more exposure without going all the way to something like Harishchandragad.

At about 130 km from Mumbai (and closer from Pune) via Murbad, it runs as a one day batch with transport, a safety briefing and leads experienced with the pinnacle rope. Because it's genuinely offbeat, the fort stays quiet even when nearby pinnacle climbs are packed — and if you want to make a full day of the Murbad hills, the neighbouring Machindragad pairs naturally with Gorakhgad for a proper back-to-back offbeat fort outing.

The roped pinnacle climb is the one stretch where Wild Rangers deliberately keeps groups small — a handful of trekkers at a time rather than the whole batch queuing together — so budget a little waiting time at the base while others go up and come back down. It's a solid next step for anyone who's done a few of the easier forts already and wants real height and exposure without committing to something on the scale of Harishchandragad.

Based in Murbad, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during July, August, September, October, November, December, January, February — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs

How difficult is Gorakhgad?

Moderate — a 3–4 km climb plus a short, exposed pinnacle scramble that we rope and manage in small groups. Fit beginners can do it; not for the vertigo-prone.

How far from Mumbai and Pune?

About 130 km from Mumbai and nearer from Pune, via Murbad.

Is the pinnacle safe?

Yes with a guide and the fixed rope — it is short and supervised, but there is real height, so follow the lead.

What are the caves?

Two caves near the top once used by ascetics; the larger one is a calm, atmospheric stop with water in the monsoon.

Best season?

October to February for dry, clear rock; July–September for green hills (roped, slick sections).

Can beginners do it?

Confident, fit beginners yes — the climb is short, but build up on easy forts first if you fear heights.

Is it crowded?

No — Gorakhgad is an offbeat fort, far quieter than the famous pinnacle climbs.

How long is the trek?

About 3–4 km each way; the pinnacle itself is a short, slow scramble.

Can we combine it with another fort?

Yes — the nearby Machindragad makes a good back-to-back offbeat fort day.

Is it open all year?

Yes, though we schedule batches around weather for safe rock conditions.
