Kalmandavi Waterfall Trek

4.5 (25 reviews)

Overview

Near Mahabaleshwar, away from the crowds that gather at the region's more famous falls, Kalmandavi pours in a slim silver ribbon straight off the laterite cliffs of the plateau, framed by a deep green valley that photographers have quietly favoured for years precisely because it delivers the waterfall experience without the Devkund-style congestion. At ₹1499 per person, it's also one of the better-value monsoon day treks running out of both Pune and Mumbai.

The walk to the falls covers about 4 to 5 km each way through forest and along a narrow ridge, following an early-morning pickup from Pune (or an overnight-style departure for the Mumbai batch) up to the Mahabaleshwar plateau, with a breakfast stop en route before the trek itself begins from the base village. It's graded Moderate — rocky descents, a couple of stream crossings, and one genuinely exposed stretch of ridge near the falls that trek leaders rope off and keep the group well behind, rather than allowing anyone to wander toward the edge for a better angle.

This is strictly a monsoon waterfall, flowing only from roughly July through September before drying up completely by October — timing really does matter here. Mornings bring the clearest views and the smallest crowds, while afternoons following heavy rain make the fall run fullest, at the cost of a noticeably slicker ridge, which is why grip shoes and a poncho both count as essential rather than optional gear.

Unlike swim-friendly cascades elsewhere in the region, Kalmandavi is firmly a look-don't-swim waterfall: the water drops into a rocky pool with no safe access from the viewpoint above, which keeps the whole experience focused on the view, the breeze off the cliff face, and the photography rather than a dip. Many batches combine the trek with a stop at the Mahabaleshwar viewpoints and the well-known local strawberry stalls on the way back, turning a single-purpose waterfall visit into a fuller day out.

For a compare-and-contrast monsoon itinerary, Kalmandavi pairs naturally with other Sahyadri cascades like Devkund, Kalu, Dudhsagar or Canyon Valley, or with the jungle-fort experience of Vasota or Ratangad if a proper climb appeals more than another waterfall. If flowers rather than falls are the goal, the Kaas Plateau trip runs through the very same plateau, in the very same season.

For photographers specifically, the smaller crowd here compared to Devkund or Kalu means far more room to set up a shot without jostling for space at the viewpoint — a genuine practical advantage on top of the scenery itself.

Based in Palghar, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during July, August, September — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs

How difficult is Kalmandavi?

Moderate. About 4–5 km each way with rocky descents and a narrow exposed ridge near the falls — fine for fit beginners, but not for very small kids.

When can I see Kalmandavi waterfall?

Only in the monsoon, roughly July to September. It is a seasonal cascade that dries up by October.

How far is it from Pune and Mumbai?

About 120 km from Pune and 250 km from Mumbai; we run it as a one-day batch with early starts.

Is it safe near the cliff?

The ridge above the falls is exposed, so our leads rope it off and keep the group together. Stay behind the marked line.

Can you swim?

Usually no — the fall drops into a rocky pool with no safe access from the top viewpoint. It is a look-don't-swim fall.

Is Kalmandavi crowded?

No, far less than Devkund or Kalu — that is its main appeal.

What should I wear?

Quick-dry clothes, grip shoes, poncho, and a full change; the ridge can be wet and windy.

Can we combine it with Mahabaleshwar?

Yes — many batches stop at the Mahabaleshwar viewpoints and strawberry stalls on the way back.

Best time of day?

Mornings are clearest and least crowded; post-rain afternoons make the fall fullest but the ridge slicker.

Is it open all year?

The trek is doable year-round, but the waterfall only flows in the monsoon, so that is the season to go.
