Hampta Pass Trek from Mumbai

4.8 (35 reviews)

Overview

Few treks change the scenery around you as completely, or as fast, as Hampta Pass does. You start in the lush, folded green valleys of Kullu, climb through meadow and moraine to a 4,300 metre pass, and drop down the other side into Spiti — a high, arid, almost lunar landscape that genuinely feels like stepping onto a different planet within the same five days.

The route runs from the Jobra/Manali side up through the Rani Nallah and Baltal meadows to the pass itself, then descends into the stark Spiti terrain with a final camp at the cobalt-blue Chandra Tal lake — a finale that regularly gets described as one of the most memorable single moments across all the treks in this range. It's graded Moderate: the pass-crossing day runs long and the altitude is genuinely real, but the trail itself is well-used and well-marked throughout, which keeps the difficulty manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness and some prior trekking experience.

Wild Rangers runs it as a flight- or train-assisted batch from Mumbai and Pune, handling the Manali connection and the drive to Jobra, with camps, meals, a mountain guide and full safety cover included across all five days. The pass day itself typically runs 8 to 9 hours of walking, which is the one stretch where genuine stamina matters more than technical skill.

June through October is the operating window — after the winter snow clears and before it closes the pass again for the season — with the valleys at their greenest early in that stretch and the Spiti side at its starkest by later summer. Fit beginners can manage it, though building up some trekking mileage beforehand is worth it given the length of the pass day specifically.

Pack warm layers, grip shoes, a proper rain layer, a headlamp and enough water for the long crossing day. A stop in Manali or a deeper push into Spiti on either end extends the trip naturally. If you want a single trek that genuinely shows you two entirely different Himalayan worlds rather than one consistent landscape stretched across five days, Hampta Pass is built for exactly that.

Because the trek crosses such different terrain within a single week, packing needs to cover both extremes properly — warm layers for cold mornings near the pass itself, and lighter gear for the arid warmth of the Spiti side once you're over it — which is worth planning for before departure rather than improvising at altitude.

Based in Himachal Pradesh, this moderate 5-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
