Andharban Trek
Overview
Andharban means 'Dark Forest,' and the name isn't marketing — it's a description. This is one of the rare descending treks in the Sahyadris, running through a dense evergreen forest in Tamhini Ghat so thick with canopy that during the monsoon, daylight barely reaches the ground. It's less a viewpoint hike than a walk straight through the middle of a genuine rainforest, which is exactly what makes it one of the more atmospheric monsoon outings near either city.
The route begins near Palse on the Tamhini side and descends roughly 6 km through the forest to the Bhira side, spilling out periodically onto clifftop viewpoints over the Mulshi dam backwaters before ducking back under the canopy. Along the way: thick walls of fern and moss, multiple rain-fed streams crossing the path (which the trek leaders rope where the current runs strong), and the kind of quiet broken only by birdsong and running water that makes this feel worlds away from a city an hour's drive back.
It's graded easy-to-moderate on gradient — there's no real climbing involved, since the whole trek runs downhill — but the distance and duration mean it isn't a casual half-hour stroll either; count on 3 to 4 hours of steady walking. Leeches are a real feature after rain, so leech salt and proper socks matter more here than on a drier trek, and it isn't the best choice for very young children or anyone who can't sustain 6 km of continuous walking.
Mid-July through early September is the sweet spot, once the first rains have properly settled in and the forest has reached full, saturated green. The drive itself is worth the trip on its own merits: past Lonavala, over Tamhini Ghat, down toward Mulshi, with waterfalls sheeting across the cliffs the entire way. From Mumbai it's about 4 to 5 hours via the Expressway and the ghat; Pune trekkers are just as welcome and can join the batch directly at the Tamhini start rather than travelling the long way round.
Transport, a guide, breakfast and lunch are included throughout. Come for the canopy, the silence, and the clifftop payoff over the Mulshi backwaters — and bring shoes with real grip, because the trail is consistently muddy rather than steep, which changes exactly what kind of footwear actually helps.
Because the whole trek runs downhill, the return logistics work a little differently to a normal fort trek — there's no re-climb at the end, just a drive back from the Bhira side once you exit the forest, which is part of why Wild Rangers can keep this to a genuine one day round trip from Mumbai despite the distance covered on foot. It's become one of the most requested first rainforest treks for exactly that reason: real forest immersion without an exhausting climb bookending it.
Based in Maharashtra, this easy 1-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
